6th Grade students had an educational blast dissecting the owl pellets that were purchased through the Davis School District Cash for Classrooms Grant. Dissecting owl pellets is a popular STEM activity used to teach students about food webs, predator-prey relationships and ecosystems.
Once students were taught about the biological anatomy of an owl, and understood that these pellets were sanitized and NOT scat or vomit, the students dove right in. A few were still squeamish, but most were fascinated and even had to be shooed out of the STEM Lab when it was time to leave. The students in these photos are showing off their cool bone finds, comprised of skulls, ribs, leg and pelvis bones of rodents or moles. This month they will use the bones they scavenged to re-create a skeleton on paper, as best as they can.
Thank you to our STEM teacher Samantha Johnson for providing this educational opportunity for our students!
